About Branimir Gjetvaj

Dr. Branimir Gjetvaj is a Saskatchewan-based environmental photographer who specializes in western Canadian landscapes. He has been recording images of scenic and wild places for over thirty years, and traveled extensively throughout North America for the last twenty. His photographs appeared in books and magazines in Canada and internationally.

Branimir obtained a degree in biology from the University of Zagreb (Zagreb, Croatia) and worked for a few years at the Croatian Museum of Natural History in Zagreb. Since arriving to Canada in 1987. he received a portrait Branimir GjetvajMaster's degree from Dalhousie University in Halifax N.S., and a Ph.D. from Queen's University in Kingston Ont. He currently resides in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Branimir served volunteer positions on the Board of Directors of several environmental non-government organizations and nature societies.

Branimir's passion for the outdoor and nature photography has led him to use his photographic work as a vehicle to promote the appreciation and protection of the environment. Through his photography and lectures, Branimir encourages people to explore the wonders of the natural world, and take an active role in protecting it. His latest project culminated in the award-winning book The Great Sand Hills: A Prairie Oasis (with text written by Rebecca Grambo). He frequently contributes his photographic skills to local conservation organizations and groups involved in environmental education.

A biologist by training, Branimir has presented numerous lectures on natural history in conjunction with his photography. Diverse audiences had a chance to enjoy numerous inspiring presentations. He also teaches photography workshops, and leads photo tours.

In 1994. Branimir participated in the Croatian sailing expedition "Arctic - Antarctic", and sailed to Greenland on a 22-metre ketch "Croatian Tern". A few of his images from this trek were published in books about the expedition. Visit the Greenland Gallery section to see a sample of images.
